Claude or ChatGPT: which is better in 2026, and for what

Both are among the best AI assistants in the world, and the gap between them shifts every few months. What decides is the task, the plan and what they do with your data. Here is the comparison, with official euro prices in Spain as of October 6, 2026.

"Which is better, Claude or ChatGPT?" is one of the AI questions that has grown most in Spain this year. The honest answer is that it depends on what for, and that the gap between them moves with every release: in September 2026 OpenAI launched its GPT-6 family and Anthropic its Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 models. Any "smartest model" ranking expires within weeks. What doesn't expire as fast are the plans, the prices, what each does with your data and the tools around the model. That's what we compare here.

The short answer

Choose ChatGPT if you want the most complete assistant for general use: it creates images, has a newly revamped voice mode, its free plan allows unlimited text chats and it has the broadest ecosystem of apps and connections. Choose Claude if your work is mostly long text and documents: drafting, reviewing contracts or reports, analyzing data and coding. Its paid plan is somewhat cheaper, it shows no ads on any plan, and it includes Claude Code and the add-ins for Excel, Word and PowerPoint from the Pro plan up.

If you'll use them with your company's information, the choice matters less than the plan: personal plans aren't designed for customer or company data.

What each one is better for

Writing and editing

Both write very well. Claude has a reputation for a more restrained style and for following long tone and format instructions more closely; ChatGPT, for being more versatile and faster on short texts. These are impressions from use, not measurements: the only reliable way to know is to give both the same real task and compare. If you often draft documents in a house style, both let you save instructions per project, and it's worth doing either way.

Long documents, contracts and reports

Here Claude has a verifiable advantage: its models support up to one million tokens of context, which is several hundred pages in a single conversation. That's useful for reviewing full contracts, tenders or reports without splitting them up. ChatGPT works well with files and projects, but OpenAI doesn't publish the app's context limit. If your work is reading a lot and summarizing accurately, start by testing Claude.

Coding

Both include a coding agent in their roughly €20 paid plans: Claude Code in Claude Pro and Codex in ChatGPT Plus. Both are among the tools developers use most, and the lead changes hands with each new model. If you code every day, the practical difference will be your plan's usage limits more than the model.

Spreadsheets and data analysis

Both run code to analyze files you upload. Claude adds add-ins inside Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook from the Pro plan, so you can work on the document without leaving Microsoft Office. ChatGPT includes data analysis tools and, from Plus up, a work mode that acts on apps and files.

Images and voice

If creating images is part of your job, ChatGPT is the natural choice: it includes it on all plans. OpenAI has also just revamped its voice mode. Claude has a voice mode, but its visual focus is on designs, presentations and documents rather than generated images.

Research

Both search the web and have a deep research mode that consults dozens of sources and returns a cited report. In ChatGPT it's on all plans with different limits; in Claude, from Pro up.

Price: what each plan gets you

On the free tier, ChatGPT is more generous with messages but shows ads. Free Claude has no ads and keeps its most capable model, Opus, for paid plans. On the individual paid plan, Claude Pro costs €18 a month excluding taxes, about €21.78 with Spanish VAT, or €15 if you pay the year upfront; ChatGPT Plus costs €23 with VAT included and has no annual option on the individual plan. For heavy use, ChatGPT Pro starts at $100 and Claude Max at €90 a month.

For teams, ChatGPT Business costs €21 per user per month billed annually (€26 monthly) and Claude Team €18 (€21.04 monthly), excluding taxes. We go into detail in what ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot cost a company.

Privacy: what they do with your conversations

This is the part most people skip, and the one that matters most if you use AI for work. On ChatGPT's personal plans, OpenAI may use your conversations to train its models unless you turn it off under Settings, Data controls, "Improve the model for everyone". In Claude, Anthropic asks each user to choose; if you agree, it keeps the data for up to five years, and if not, thirty days. On both providers' business plans, ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, Claude Team and Enterprise, neither trains on your data by default.

There's a second nuance: where data is stored. Anthropic states that claude.ai data is stored in the United States and the app offers no European data residency. OpenAI offers data residency in Europe, but only to new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu customers, not on Business. If your company handles customers' personal data, check with whoever runs data protection before choosing.

And in a company, which one?

In a company the question is usually framed wrong. Legal will want the model that reads long contracts best; marketing, the one that creates images best; engineering, whichever coding agent is ahead that quarter. And the one ahead changes: according to Menlo Ventures, leadership in enterprise spend on models has changed hands twice in three years, with OpenAI going from 50% to 27% and Anthropic from 12% to 40% between 2023 and 2025. Buying everything from a single provider is betting that you've chosen right forever.

There are three ways out: buy both and accept two tools, two invoices and knowledge split between them; stick with one and accept the dependency; or use a platform that gives access to several models from one place, with the company's data and agents shared. That's Azimut's proposal, which includes models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Mistral. We explain it in more detail in which AI to choose for a company.

How to decide for yourself in half an hour

  1. Pick three real tasks from your week: a text you need to write, a long document you need to summarize and a question about data.
  2. Give exactly the same task, with the same instructions and files, to both free plans.
  3. Score each answer from 1 to 5 on accuracy, usefulness and how much you'd have to fix.
  4. If the result is even, decide on everything else: price, privacy, ads and the tools you'll use (images, Excel, coding).

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Claude or ChatGPT?

It depends on the task. ChatGPT is more complete for general use, images and voice; Claude stands out for long documents, drafting and working inside Excel, Word and PowerPoint. The quality gap changes with every new model, so it's worth testing both on a real task.

Which is better for free?

Free ChatGPT allows unlimited text chats, but with ads. Free Claude has no ads and includes web search, files and connectors, with per-session usage limits and without its most capable model.

Is Claude Pro worth paying for?

If you use it daily for work, yes: it costs €18 a month excluding taxes, or €15 billed annually, and adds the Opus model, Claude Code, the Office add-ins, projects and research. If you use it occasionally, the free plan is usually enough.

Which is better for coding?

Both include a coding agent in their roughly €20 plan: Claude Code in Claude Pro and Codex in ChatGPT Plus. The lead changes with each model; in practice the plan's usage limits matter more.

Do they use my conversations for training?

On personal plans they may: ChatGPT has it on by default and Claude asks you to choose; both can be turned off. On business plans neither trains on your data by default.

Can I use Claude and ChatGPT at the same time?

Yes. Many people pay for one and use the other for free. In a company, the alternative to paying for two tools is a multi-model platform that gives access to both from one place, such as Azimut.
